Vélez Sarsfield was founded on January 1, 1910, in the Liniers neighborhood of Buenos Aires. The club was created by a group of young people looking to promote sports in the community. Its name honors the Argentine military and political figure Felipe Vélez Sarsfield, who played an important role in the country's history.

Vélez Sarsfield's golden era occurred in the 1990s when the club won several league titles and the Copa Libertadores in 1994.
